How to improve audio quality in FaceTime calls on iPhone

The FaceTime application is one of the most popular apps used by iPhone users for making voice and video calls, and it includes many features such as Live Captions for transcribing the conversation into text, Portrait mode which enhances the clarity of your image during video calls and reduces the clarity of the background, and many other features.

Starting with the iOS 15 operating system, Apple introduced the Voice Isolation feature to FaceTime to improve the quality of the sound during calls. This feature muffles background noises such as the sounds of children playing in a nearby room or the sounds of cars outside your home, so that others can hear you clearly during a FaceTime call.

Here's how to activate the Voice Isolation feature in FaceTime:

You won't find the Voice Isolation feature in the Settings app on your iPhone. Instead, you need to start a FaceTime call to enable it. Once you have enabled it for the first time, it will remain active for future FaceTime video calls.

Here's how to enable the Voice Isolation feature on your iPhone:

  1. Join a FaceTime video call.
  2. Swipe down from the upper right corner of your screen to access the Control Center.
  3. Tap the Mic Mode option, which appears near the upper right corner of your screen.
  4. Select the Voice Isolation option.

How to activate Wide Spectrum feature:

The Mic Mode provides another feature called Wide Spectrum in addition to the Voice Isolation feature, which suppresses the other sounds around you. While Voice Isolation feature mutes the surrounding sounds, Wide Spectrum enhances group sounds without affecting the clarity of your voice.

This feature is suitable for group calls on FaceTime or if you have a large group of people who want to talk to someone else. For example, if you have a brother or sister in another country and you want to celebrate something with them and your family, the Wide Spectrum feature can help enhance the sound of all family members while singing together at the same time.

To activate this feature, follow the same steps for activating the Voice Isolation feature, but instead of selecting Voice Isolation, choose Wide Spectrum, and this feature will remain active in FaceTime for the next call.
